Possible infection
Hi Guys
I fished the pond last week when this Bream of around 4lbs came out.
According to Peter Turner of 'The Environment Agency' it is some form of secondary infection.
Could anyone fishing please have a good look at your catches to see if there is any signs of infection and let either myself or any other committee member know. Thank you

Hello all
I am sure by now that you know Chris Parkin resigned his
position as Bailiff some weeks ago.
Chris worked very hard to try and improve things at the pond
for all concerned with various groups including Leeds city council and the
environment agency.
My self and some of
the committee members are going to try and carry on the work that Chris started
with a view to improving the fishing and facilities at the pond, but would like
to know your thoughts and ideas.
If there is something you would like to bring up for discussion
please email Mark Smith with your request.
Thank you
Mark Smith

I spent a pleasant day at the pond today managing to catch 2 carp and 4 tench , and i am pleased to say all the fish were in great condition. No signs of any more carp dying thankfully, and one of the council guys going around picking up litter too. There were still a few carp in spawning mode splashing around in the pads.

URGENT MESSAGE - DEAD CARP
One of our members has reported finding 3 large dead Carp at the pond today - see below
Hi Neil
Further to our phone conversation:
To recap, Phil contacted me to report the death of 3 carp, a mirror 23lb, a badly decomposed common about the same and a common 9lb. (picture attached of 2 of the fish, I had to dump the decomposing one due to the smell) I contacted the EA on 0800807060 they gave me the incident number 1004835.
They said they were unlikely to attend the pond to take water samples as there was no sign of pollution and it was only a small number of fish involved. Someone is going to get back to me regarding disposal of the carcasses.
Walking round the pond, we collected a bin liner full of rubbish and noted several fresh remains of fires,
Will let you know of any further developments,
......................................................................................................................................................................
If anybody finds more dead fish can you please let me know - if you find large numbers (more than 10) can you please ring the Environment agency on 0800807060 and report immediately.
It also appears that our rogue members are still persisting in lighting fires and leaving lots of litter on the bank. Can anyone tell me in confidence who these people are so we can kick these idiots out of the club.

fished today (sunday) from approx 5.30am on wards. chris was already fishing, no other anglers on all day, i had 3 perfect condition tench all around the 4 - 5lb mark to boillies, no sign of any carp for me , but chris broke his pauls pond carp duck with a fine looking 16lb mirror, pressure off now chris , you need to start banking more of them lol.
again had a lot of people asking about membership and how to apply, i've not given out any details but what is the best contact detail to give out, Neil do you have or can set up an email account just for people to contact, an oline one then you do not get hassle in your normal mail, just a thought.
i tell them there is a waiting list but does not seem to put off people.

Chris Parkin resignation
It is with great
regret and much sadness that BT Leeds Angling club has received the resignation
of Chris Parkin as the club bailiff / representative. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Chris for all his hard work, time, determination and devotion he has
given to this angling club.
The reasons for
Chris’s resignation have been detailed in his letter and a lot had to do with
the general apathy of Leeds City Council and the police, but one of the main
reasons (I believe) is down to the general behaviour of some of our own members
who are not abiding by the rules of this club.
Chris is too much of a gentleman to tell me the full details of what
transpired last Friday and Saturday night at the pond where many members were
night fishing and some issues occurred resulting in many phone calls being made
to Chris, totally ruining his anniversary and birthday weekend.
Chris has arranged a none
emergency contact telephone number for the local police teams to attend any
poaching incidents at the pond, but the whole point is that the persons fishing have to ring and
report and give details of numbers of poachers, exact locations etc , not ring
Chris and expect him to do it.
The rules of this club states
quite clearly NO FIRES. It must be
fairly obvious to any idiot why this rule has to apply, yet many of our members
are having fires while night fishing.
Unfortunately I don’t know for certain yet who these people are, but
anyone identified will have their membership cancelled and the question of
whether to allow night fishing will be asked.
Can I also ask that members of
the general public walking around the pond be treated with respect and not
abused, even if their dogs are being a pest..

Bailiff Duties
After 18 months of doing the bailiff duties at Paul’s Pond I am giving notice that I am stepping down from that roll.
The reasons are many and varied but the main cause is the utter lack of support from everybody who has an interest in the fishery (with the notable exception on the Environment Agency).
LCC have been completely disinterested in even maintaining the place. I have spent hundreds of hours sorting out what they should be doing as a Council.
I gave up days off work and countless hours of my time to go to “meetings” where promises are made and next to nothing is delivered. I feel completely let down and demoralised by their incredible apathy.
- With the help of the EA I proved that the fish stocks, which were decimated in 1993, have never recovered. LCC have blocked our proposals to re-stock to levels recommended by the EA and have not come up with any plan to address this issue.
- The island on the pond has still not been cleared of detritus left by campers more that a year after it was flagged up as a problem.
- Parks Watch do not visit the pond and check tickets as was agreed. This issue leaves me completely exposed to threats of violence and abuse from people who aren’t even fishing (more on that point later) especially at night and at the weekends.
- Emails and phone calls are routinely ignored and there is no substantive line of communication with BTLAC.
West Yorkshire Police said that the pond and the issues surrounding it was a priority for their neighbourhood policing team. Regular patrols were promised and have never materialised. This issue came to a head this weekend when I asked officers to attend as I had taken several calls complaining about behaviour of people at the site. On Friday night I was told “officers attended but nobody was there” (they went to the wrong place) and last night I had to forcefully persuade officers at Weetwood to attend after many complaints were made to me about the same issues.
BTLAC members have in general been co-operative. However the lack of support from them when any issues arise does not help matters either. If any anti social behaviour occurs members seem to think that I am on call to sort it out 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Not one member has phoned the Police about the problems they have encountered, they phone me instead, and I have had enough of it.
This weekend has brought matters to a head for me. As the sun was out I pre warned Parks Watch (answering machine) and the Neighbourhood Policing Team (put through to a phone which wasn’t answered) that there would be issues with camping and illegal fishing. Nobody even cared to ring me back let alone take any action. As predicted the calls started coming to me on Friday evening, reporting campers and fires etc round the pond. Last night was no different and I spent a considerable amount of time trying to sort out what was happening. I took abuse from BTLAC members and met resistance from the Police when I asked for support.
Friday was my wedding anniversary and yesterday was my birthday. Both occasions were ruined by problems relating to Paul’s Pond.
I have tried to get the authorities together to co-ordinate a plan for the fishery but feel I have been banging my head on a brick wall and I now have a considerable headache. I am not paid for the work I have done but enough is enough and I will as of now be stepping down as bailiff and will not be co-ordinating any action relating to the pond.
My recommendation to BTLAC for future action is.
- Ban night fishing.
- Set up a rota for ticket checks at the site during the remainder of 2012
- Withdraw the free Police tickets, as there is no co-operation from them any longer.
- Finally with a heavy heart I suggest that the lease be given up at the end of this season. The fishery is not worth having anymore and the problems surrounding it are just not being tackled with any degree of commitment.
I will pass on all the administrative passwords for the BTLAC Blog, contact details for any interested parties etc, to whoever wishes to take it on.

Update
Massive carp spawning in the lillies. I saw at least 15 of them today up to 30lb splashing around. While watching them I also saw 3 very large bream, also spawning. Then to top it all off I scared a shoal of perch fry which leapt out and landed on the lily pads and wriggled off (eventually). Pond is looking healthy and I have also had confirmation that the council are sorting the banks and footpaths..
All good then.
All good then.

Update
A few folk fishing this week. No carp reported but a 6lb Tench caught today. As the weather warms up the fish will come on and catches will get better.

Update
A few folk fishing this week but it's been bloody cold. Tench on meat to 4lb. Perch as always. A soon as the rain stops the Carp start cruising in the lilies. One notable pair are around 15+ and are always together. She is a bit pale but is playing hard to get. Birds nesting on the fish hide. LOL

URGENT NOTICE
URGENT MESSAGE PLEASE READ
Anyone fishing either Non-Go-By farm or Yeadon Tarn should NOT use their nets at the pond. Signal Crayfish have been found at both sites and there is significant risk of bringing them and the diseases they carry to our water.

Drought advice from EA
Advice note to stillwater fisheries
Drought status confirmed for parts of East and South Yorkshire: protect fish and other wildlife
Water situation update
As you are aware official drought status has been confirmed for parts of East and South Yorkshire. This is due to a lack of rain in South Yorkshire and low groundwater levels in East Yorkshire combined with a dry weather forecast. The drought status applies to catchments of the rivers Don, Rother, Derwent and Hull. As the dry spell is set to contintue over the coming months we are going to see lower river levels and some small becks drying up which will affect fish and other wildlife.
Suggested advice to stillwater fishery managers and owners
We recommend that you consider the following actions in order to minimise the risk of fish mortalities:
Ø Keep a close watch on water levels and look for any signs of fish in distress. Visiting the water early in the morning will allow you to observe your fishery when dissolved oxygen levels are at there lowest.
Ø To help maintain water levels repair leaky sluices or control structures so as to preserve valuable water resources.
Ø Consider restricting the use of bait and ground bait to avoid unnecessary pressure on water quality.
Ø Minimise the use of keepnets. If a match is planned consider using multiple weigh-ins to avoid unnecessary stress to fish stocks.
Ø Avoid stocking further fish.
Ø Consider reducing fish stock densities to avoid problems later with reducing water levels and low dissolved oxygen levels. Prior to moving any fish, a consent is required from the Environment Agency, which is designed to reduce both the spread of fish disease and non-native species.
Ø With the potential of low water levels and high temperatures, care must be taken over fish welfare.
Ø If you believe your fishery may be at risk from low dissolved oxygen levels due to algal growth, low water levels, elevated temperatures or over-crowding - be prepared - and check that you have access to water pumps, aeration equipment[1] and generators.
Please note:
Ø Talk to us before you relocate fish, as our written consent is required. This is designed to reduce the spread of both fish diseases and non-native fish species.
Ø We won’t normally rescue fish. However, in exceptional circumstances, we may consider an emergency fish rescue if we can find somewhere safe to move them to and on the condition that the fish have been health screened within the last 6 months.
Ø Please report any dead carp to us immediately as this may be due to a disease outbreak.
If you see any fish in distress please tell us immediately by calling our National Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60
We have included a poster with this advice note, which you may wish to put up in an appropriate location at your fishery.
Thank you for your support in helping us minimise the impacts of the dry weather. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated. For further assistance or advice, please contact our area Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity team on 03708 506 506
[1] You can get aeration equipment locally from companies listed in the Yellow Pages or online.

Catch returns
Last weekend 3 Carp to 25lb and numerous Tench to 5lb.
Working party managed to get one fish hide installed and failed on the second one. The result looks bloody awful and we'll be in bother if the council see it. Mark, Andy and I will sort it out.
Thanks to everyone who turned up to help last Sunday.

New Signs
Amazingly the council have at last amended the info boards at all entry points to Breary Marsh. They clearly state Private Fishing etc and there are 4 new signs around the pond itself. WOW. I also had a very interesting talk with a senior member of Parks and Countryside about how we proceed with improvements today.
It'll take a little longer that I first hoped but we will have a MUCH better fishery this year.

Last week
Well the pond is waking up after the winter and those lillies have started their 2012 invasion. Lots of fish sighted but none caught yet despite a few runs and a Carp snapping a Tench andgler.
These little monkeys are hoovering up a lot of bait.

Working party date to be announced here in the next day or so.

Winter Update
Well I was surprised to find two lads illegal fishing a couple of weeks back in very very cold conditions. They were "advised" and sent on their way.
I'm banging my head against a brick wall with the Council and their promises but will keep at it.
I have sent a strongly worded email to let them know what we think of progress so far but surprisingly (ha) haven't heard back from them.
Please note that everyone should have tickets by now (correct me if I'm wrong Neil). Everyone except me who has been slow off the mark again.
