Update

Council have been up doing more tidying again today.
One Perch fry found dead on the bank probably dropped by a seagul but it shows they're breeding.
Had a couple of hours trying for Pike on Sunday without sucess but I still think they are there. Carp are still moving about but no reports of catches.

Monday 31 October 2011

Update

Only 1 guy fishing all last week. Some suspicion of a Pike in the pond.
Also had confirmation that we are getting a free fish survey hopefully later this or ealy next year at the latest.
Council had been back again to clear more Lillies

Monday 24 October 2011

Update

Well as expected the pond has been quiet this week. The council have started on the lilies and look to have got a fair few roots out.
I'm trying to keep an eye on how many dead swan mussels there are as there have been quite a few in recent weeks. Wondering whether it's anything to do with raking out the lilies?
Also 1 dead Tench spotted on Saturday but that's to be expected after the 1st frost.

BIG NEWS

Had a meeting with 5 people from the council and voluntary groups at the pond on Wednesday. They have agreed to:

  • Repair the walls

  • Tackle the persistent tree growth which is causing the damage

  • Put up signs on the info boards to make sure people know it's private fishing and camping and fires are not allowed.

  • Clear the island of all the rubbish left on there

  • Get on top of the Lilly problem (with our help)

  • Put regular maintenance procedures in place

I'd say that was a result.

Not much caught this week. Tench still showing with a few Perch but no Carp action. No illegal fishing or camping.

Wednesday 12 October 2011

Sunday 9 October 2011

Working party - Saturday 7th October

A working party took place on Saturday morning in the rain. Five willing members cut back and removed all the small tree branches growing out of the dam wall, removed several old logs and branches from the pond and managed to pull a few lily roots out with a grappling iron.
Thanks to Chris Parkin, Andy Stonehouse, Dave Rowson, Andy Pickard and Neil Handley for their participation.

Monday 3 October 2011

Update

Due to the fab weather it was really no surprise to catch 5 fishing without permits in the last week. Saturday night had a load of kids camping who were dealt with by the neighbourhood policing team (thanks to them).
Fishing has been patchy but some great Perch have been caught. Lots of small ones have been seen too.
Please see the earlier post about a clean up on Saturday.

Sunday 2 October 2011

No illegal fishing though which is good news.
Fish survey is on the horizon so we can see what we've got in the pond, how it's growing, health checks etc then we can have an informed re-stock in 2012.

Saturday 24 September 2011

Spent a few hours here yesterday trying for the carp but blanked on them but did manage to catch a couple of tench on boillie around the 4-5lb mark.

Slow start to the week as 2 poor guys get 1 small perch for 13 hours fishing.A bit of rain livened things up with one half day session netting 8 Tench and losing 5 with a smattering of Perch. Carp boys did well with 5 doubles to 25 lbs.
No non members this week.

Wednesday 24 August 2011

WHAT DO YOU WANT??

After a very interesting meeting with Pete Turner of the Environment Agency a load of different options have been put forward to improve the fishery. BUT, what do you lot want from it?
Andy Stonehouse and I have done our best, with help from the local police team, to create a safe environment free from illegal fishing.
We have made moves to get the overgrown banks and lilly infestation sorted which should bear fruit before April next year.
Next on the list is the fish.. What do you want in there? More Bream, Carp, Tench? Should we re-introduce Roach or Rudd? Pike even?
Please email me with your views chrisparkin65@btinternet.com

Sunday 21 August 2011

Updates

No illegal fishing last week (that I know of). Load of kids camping and leaving a mess on Thurs.
Lots of members fishing and more to the point catching!
Looks like people actually angling is stirring the fish up.
Left messages again with EA and Parks last week about clear up and re-stocking.

Wednesday 17 August 2011

Tuesday 16 August 2011

Last week

Quite a few members fishing last week with some great Tench out again. One bloke "fishing" without a ticket but with the gear he had the fish were completeley safe. And he'd only had one cast when I rocked up to spoil his evening.
Lots of fish showing and members are policing the pond really well.

"JB who lives in the big house said we could fish it" they said "he's the bailiff"..... I informed them otherwise. Ah well. Looks like there are more and more members fishing the lake at the moment which is great to see. Lovely Tench pictured below will have gone like a train.
Favourite bait for Tench at the moment is Spam. Sweetcorn not doing so well. Maggot is taking Perch and some Tench.

night fishing

Had the best catch of my life and dont ever expect to catch a fish of this quality ever again. At 1am on worm, close in i hooked on to a fish i thought was a carp,15 mins later to my amazment and surprise it was a tench of between 7-8lb.I have caught many tench over the years and up to date my best was about 5lbs this fish kicked butt.A absolute cracking place to fish.

Pond catch records

Have a look to the right of the blog and you'll find records of the biggest fish caught at the pond. I've put my own catches up there for starters (27lb Common belongs to Phil).
If you have caught bigger ones let me know and post a picture if you have one.
I'd really like to hear of all the catches so I can determine the stock levels before I meet with the Environment Agency next month.
No fishermans tales please.

Friday 22 July 2011

The pond has always fished better either early a/m or evening. If fishing through the day - try to pick an overcast, breezey day.

Wednesday 20 July 2011

Things are moving.

Had a very useful meeting with Elaine, Natural Habitats Manager, at the pond this morning who is very sympathetic to our point of view.
Also made contact with Jerome at the EA to get them on board with possibly re-stocking fish that were removed in 93.
Watch this space.

Monday 18 July 2011

Sunday Suppliment

Lovely hot day so knew there'd be poachers. Three guys who'd been up there on Friday took another chance. Left quite peacefully after a chat. If they're seen again without a ticket I'll let the coppers deal with em.

I actually fished the pond!!!

For the first time in years I took a rod down with me for a couple of hours yesterday. Lost 2 good Tench on spam and landed one Moorhen on corn.
One Tench snapped me (didn't check the drag and it had gummed up through lack of use.. DOH) other dropped the bait before I could set the hook.
Loads of activity with fish showing all over the pond. Monster Carp cruising everywhere. Tench bubbles all over.
Just missing a few more fishermen...

Friday evening poachers.

One of our members - Mark Smith rang me earlier to say he found seven poachers at the pond this evening. He didn't get too heavy with them, but warned them that the fishery was private and if seen again would be reported to the police.

Look at the Police Priority on the website

Cookridge Neighbourhood

Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Coldwell

Telephone 01274 471 458

In an Emergency always dial 999.
For Non Emergenices dial 0845 6060606.

Local priorities for the Cookridge Neighbourhood are:

  • Poaching - Pauls Pond, Pinfold Lane 6pm to 8pm Fri/Sat/Sun

Tench at Paul's Pond

This is my first involvment with blogging, so apologies if it is not what is wanted.

I do pleasure fishing, still water venues in North Leeds.

I get up to Paul's Pond several times in the year, it is a great location apart from the walk and the sometimes the blank days.

Interested in the talk of re-stocking, a boat load of roach would be good, I like to catch the bigger fish but catching anything can make a difference to the day.

Have included a picture of a 4lb Tench caught in April, not the biggest I have had but it is rare that there is anyone about to take a photo

Email sent to Paul Robinson (Parks and Countryside)

Paul

Thank you for coming over this morning and bringing Gary. Glad you liked the area.

To summarise what we discussed.

  • Signage: Please find attached copies of notices sent by West Yorks Police. It would be great if these could go on the info boards at the access points.
  • Litter: Bins not a likely option but Gary to send one of his team to the pond regularly to deal with litter. I have his direct number if there's a big problem.
  • Pond maintenance. BTLAC lease the pond as a fishery and it is getting increasingly difficult to fish due to massive lily beds and silting problems on the dam wall. I'm not sure who we would need to speak to but would happy to meet up with someone to discuss possible solutions.
  • Fish stocks. In 1993 during the building of Cookridge Hall Golf Course there was a major problem with clay silt being washed into the pond. The Environment Agency netted the water to save a lot of the stock. Due to issues with transfer of disease it was deemed that Golden Acre park lake was the "same water" and the fish were moved there on a temporary basis while Paul's Pond recovered. They only managed to net about 50% of the fish and current stock is from the remaining fish breeding. When the agency was approached to net Golden Acre to recover the fish they declined for various, and no doubt fiscal, reasons. BTLAC would dearly love to have the chance to get these fish back into their home water and could supervise the transfer of fish if we were granted appropriate permissions to fish Golden Acre over a pre agreed and strictly limited period.

I look forward to hearing from you when you return from Edinburgh (hope you have a great time).

Regards

Chris Parkin

Police Update

On friday evening i got two PCSO's to go around the pond about 10.00-1030pm
ish - they spoke with one man who had a permitt and there were no other
issues.

This evening (Monday) myself and Nikki went to the pond around 17.30hrs. We
spoke with three males. One had a permit, the other two were, as we thought,
spectating. We walked all the way around the pond and found abandoned
fishing gear. The two other males then came over to us and said it was
theirs and that they didnt have a permit. Their names were taken and they
were asked to leave. One of the males did have a regular fishing permit
just not a Pauls pond one but he said he would get one. Obviuously if i
see these males again there and they dont have a permit i can now escalate
it further.

New signs from the Neighbourhood Policing team

What do you think???

Saturday Suppliment

No poachers this week ! Nobody fishing it at all in fact. Andy cleared loads of litter and logs on Saturday afternoon.
I've got a meeting with Paul Ribinson (Parks and Countryside technical officer) at the pond at 9am Wednesday to discuss signs, litter and getting some maintenance at the pond. Feel free to join us if you are around.

Saturday 18 June 2011

Saturday Suppliment

A 9.30 walk revealed 10 teenage kids on the island having a party. None of them were any harm but had fires going and told me they'd been going there for ages. The centre of the island has been cleared and there are 2 tree houses on it.
They have been carrying a big inflatable across the golf course to get there!
Can't say I'd have done any different when I was 18. But...
Told them to stop the fires and clear up their litter but carry on for the evening if they could stand the rain.
Could be a money spinner. Secluded island, totally private, accessed by a private boat, no motor vehicles, treetop views, superb fishing..Mustique or Paul's Pond?

How to join the blog.

Email your name and email address to chrisparkin65@btinternet.com. I'll then send you an invitation to join and you can start posting yourselves.

Sat Update

Not much except the litter. Nobody doing much with the carp fanatics not reporting any monsters to the bank.

Thursday 16 June 2011

And lots of these coming out at the moment 3-4lb average.

12 1/2lb 1hour 40 mins 3lb line! (6 years ago)

More Poachers

Caught 2 blokes making their way to the pond via Esporta. Stopped them and asked for their tickets and took a load of abuse and threats. Contacted the Police on their non-emergency number and met up with them later at the pond (poachers had gone by then).
Really good to see they are taking the problems at the pond seriously. I'll add the number to the Blog so you can call them if you have any trouble up there.

Wednesday 15 June 2011

Poachers and litter

Contrary to earlier report there were 3 blokes with Shimano tackle spotted leaving the pond on Saturday night. They left behind 3 crates of beer cans and other litter and which filled a large bin bag.
They also had a fire which spread to one of the trees. If anyone is near the pond on Saturday evening please keep an eye on things and let me know on 07951 22 15 15. I'll try and get up late evening but work and kids may prevent it happening.

Monday 13 June 2011

Welcome to the BTLAC Blog for Paul's Pond

Week ending 12/6/11. No poachers. New signs put up around the pond. Someone overnighted on Saturday and left a fire burning and loads of cans (hope it wasn't one of ours). Catches: Tench to 4lb and Perch on red maggot to Christie.
